Drone Technology and Application

Special thanks to David Giudici of Altitude Drone Imaging LLC for an overview of drone technology and a wide array of applications now being served by drones including uses in security, safety, rescue, fire detection and law enforcement work.

Drone sizes range from small 10-15 inch spans to 10-15’ with an ability to carry payloads up to 400 pounds. Many drones are used in video surveillance related applications providing video, thermal and radar detection, especially in low light (IR) conditions. Another major use is for analysis/assessments after incidents have occurred. One example is to check the inside of a building for humans left behind or possibly in hiding.

Most pilots require licensing by the FAA. Drones are typically limited to 400’ and need a clear ceiling of 2,000’ to 3,000’. Other limitations include that they are not to directly hover over individuals, need to stay away from certain designated areas e.g. NYS/County Parks and can be impacted by difficult weather.

Federal/State/Local governments can only use drones that are NDAA compliant – manufactured in the USA. Many early drones were made in China and the U.S. government has now banned their use in applications for security reasons.

Drone usage is growing in law enforcement and security. Some police departments have outfit each of their cars with a drone and will often start a covert operation by launching a drone.
