Protecting Workforce and Customers
We thank Lori Schreib and Wegmans Asset Protection team for a great presentation at the October ASIS Rochester meeting. We had over 25 attendees at this meeting. Lori and her team covered a variety of topics concerning workplace violence, store lockdowns, SOC responsibilities, data intelligence, and systematic crime and asset protection. Wegmans outlined their well-formed procedures booklet that is used with employees and managers as well as their training including recently added videos around de-escalation techniques.
Wegmans has been proactive in integrating the security work with organization health -- e.g. attention to mental health. This has helped identify potential risky situations and address them before problems occur.
The Risk Intelligence team helps to provide data that is helping to identify unsafe situations and heavy hitters, those that commit repeated offenses both in the areas of asset protection, theft and other crimes (e.g. parking lot violence).
Wegmans process involves preparation and mitigation and the response follows a structured cycle: Incident (time 0), Validating a Mobilization (1-3 hours if not sooner), Response (3-24 hours), Recovery (1-7 days), and Return (to normal). These activities are supported by the UL certified Security Operations Center based in the Rochester area HQ. This SOC is capable of dispatching emergency responders, CCTV monitoring, managing alarms/intrusions, response decision tree support, reporting, and mass communications.
Quality and Safety Audits are performed on a regular basis at each store. Wegmans has 80 recovery plans. These plans are used in training. Response & Recovery teams are built at various levels including Executive (Senior VP), Business leaders, site management and support.
